How are student teaching placements decided?

For most programs, placements are made based on the following criteria, submitted by the Student Teacher during registration:

 

Areas of study you are prepared to teach: these areas correspond to NM educator endorsements.

Grades you are interested in teaching: if we are unable to provide an exact match, we may place you in a grade higher or lower than those requested.

Desired district: choice of district can affect the number of prerequisite actions required of the Student Teacher before being authorized for placement.

Student Teacher's address: all things being equal, we attempt to create placements that minimize travel time.

 

UNM Field Services Center does not guarantee a perfect alignment of all criteria on every placement, as placement options are determined by school district policy, the available pool of Cooperating Teachers, and ongoing strategic outreach efforts by the UNM College of Education.
