How do I teach using OPAL (Online Portfolio Alternative Licensure)?

The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) has made available a powerful set of resources for NM teachers and administrators at http://teachnm.org.  We encourage you to utilize this website when you have questions about teaching-related issues in order to most quickly find your answers and accomplish your goals!

The section of the TeachNM website on OPAL is accessed by clicking “New Teachers” at the top and then “Online Portfolio for Alternative Licensure” - http://teachnm.org/new-teachers/online-portfolio-for-alternative-licensure.html

The section of the TeachNM website on the 3-Tiered Licensure System may also be helpful.  It is accessed by clicking "Experienced Teachers" at the top and then "3-Tiered Licensure System" - http://teachnm.org/programs/3-tiered-licensure-system.html

If everything goes correctly, you can begin teaching using OPAL within one year. Here are the necessary steps to do so:

  1. Get an Intern License at the Licensure Bureau
  2. While you are waiting for your license, get a teaching position as the teacher of record
  3. During your first year, take the three New Mexico Teaching Assessments - these will include the basic skills, teacher content, and teacher competencies
  4. After you have passed these tests, take 1 or 2 reading courses depending on what your license is
  5. At the end of your first year you may submit your OPAL if you have taken all your tests and courses
